Worship Leader
Pastor Dave & Mary Klase

Pastor Dave considers it a privilege to serve as the pastor of Door of Hope Church, a congregation he and his wife, Mary, helped start in 2016 alongside two other couples. With a shared burden for the city of Reading, they felt called to create an English-speaking, multi-ethnic church that proclaims the truth and hope found in God’s Word. This vision was also shared by Pastor Tony Perez of Iglesia Bautista Betania (Bethany Baptist Church). Together, these two churches now share a ministry partnership and a building, demonstrating a beautiful picture of unity in Christ.

Pastor Dave and Mary are continually amazed and thrilled by how Christ is transforming lives within their church family. Many members have come from difficult pasts, but God is writing new stories of hope and restoration through His grace.

A graduate of Exeter High School (1977), Liberty University (1981, Pastoral Counseling), and Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1985, Master of Divinity), Pastor Dave has devoted his life to ministry. In 1986, he and Mary moved to Philadelphia to plant New Life Baptist Church, serving in that urban community for 17 years. They later pastored Exeter Bible Church for 13 years before launching Door of Hope Church.

In addition to his pastoral role, Pastor Dave serves as a part-time chaplain with Marketplace Chaplains, a nationwide ministry providing spiritual care to the business community. He is also the board president of FIM Mission, an Allentown-based organization supporting over 150 missionaries in 25 countries.

Married since 1982, Pastor Dave & Mary have been soul mates and best friends all these years. They are blessed with three adult children and their spouses, who thankfully have all placed their faith in Christ as Savior and desire to live for Him. They also enjoy being Papa and Gram to a sweet growing bunch of grandkids.

Pastor Dave loves sports, and is an avid fan of Penn State and all Philly teams (Go Birds)! He also finds great joy in observing God’s magnificent creation and the awe it brings to his heart. Things he enjoys doing include watching football, shooting baskets at outdoor courts, bird watching, reading, praying with his wife and taking walks with her, hanging out with his family, and taking their annual family vacation to Ocean City, NJ.

Values That Drive Us

The Importance of God's Word

God uses His Word to teach us all spiritual truth, and to point us to the Good News of His salvation. Therefore, we are driven to learn it and live it by God's grace, and then to share it with others in our community, in homes, in small groups, and in our Sunday Gathering.

The City of Reading

We enjoy the challenges and blessings of a city, and we know that God cares deeply about each person who lives there. Therefore, we are driven to be involved and invested in the lives of people in our city.

The Love of God

God demonstrated amazing love for us by sending His Son to die for our salvation. Therefore, we are driven to grow personally in our love for Christ, and to love people as He does. Foundational to our ministry is building relationships where people can travel life together, and where we can serve and love each other.

The Ministry of Discipleship

In the gospel accounts Jesus gave us the model of cultivating depth in His followers. In Acts and the New Testament letters we see this same commitment. Therefore, we are driven to take people wherever they are in life, and to follow an intentional plan of discipleship that will help them learn the big story of the Bible, how to study God's Word for themselves, how to share it with others, how to live a life of obedience and victory, and finally how to help others walk the same path.

The Privilege of Prayer

Learning how to communicate with the true and living God is a mystery and an adventure. It is a door that leads to a personal relationship with God, and through which we see God answer needs for ourselves, others, and the community. Therefore, we are driven to prioritize prayer into our personal lives and into our church experience, and to watch God work in ways that are beyond human accomplishment.
